Maya Waits for the Cake

What happens

Maya and Papa are baking a birthday cake for Mama: two warm eggs from the henhouse, a bowl of red berries, batter stirred round and round, flour puffing up like a cloud. Then the pan goes in the oven and Papa sets the timer, and the hard part starts. "Is it ready yet?" So they fill the time — a book about a bear waiting for spring, flowers picked in the garden, clouds watched from the porch step, napkins folded, a banner taped above the window — and then, at last, ding.
