What happens
Bo is a small red boat with a cheerful little flag who watches the big ships go out to sea and stays close to the calm, safe shore. One afternoon dark clouds roll in, the wind gets up, the waves grow tall — and a tiny voice calls for help from far out: a duck stuck on a rock, with nobody else near. Bo's heart goes thump, thump, thump. "I am little," he says, "but I can try." Up and down through the waves he goes, bumpity-bump, and does not turn back.
Why it works at bedtime
The clearest definition of courage on the shelf, said out loud by the character: he was scared and tried anyway. The storm blows over on the way home and the book ends with the harbor calm and Bo rocking gently in it.
